1800 Block Diamond Street (Houses), North side, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA

Significance: The 1800 block of Diamond Street is representative of the type of urban housing built for upper-middle-class Philadelphians late in the nineteenth century. Constructed along a premier east-west avenue eventually connecting Broad Street and Fairmount Park, the desirable rows that lined Diamond Street by 1900 were generally larger and displayed finer detailing than those on adjacent streets. Because the 1800 block was conceived of in conjunction with the residence of local real estate agent/builder Thomas H. Parks, the row stood out among the expanse of high-status Diamond Street residences with its stone facing and eclectic form and detailing. Angus S. Wade, one of the architects particularly associated with high-end nouveau riche commissions in Northwest Philadelphia, was responsible for the design.
