201-215 West Main Street (Commercial Buildings), Madison, Jefferson County, IN
Summary
Significance: The commercial buildings of West Main Street were constructed at different times between 1830 and 1854. The block's eclectic appearance is the result of the uneven treatment of individual facades, ranging from very simple to highly ornate designs. Some are embellished with fine cast-iron and sheet-metal mouldings around entrances and over windows. Others are quite plainly appointed with only a trace of extraneous detail. This block is a good example of the streetscapes seen throughout the Midwest during the 19th century.
