Agreement in Lewis v. Leonard et al, [Law papers].
Summary
Portion of document appears to be in Lincoln's hand.
Summary: Leonard and others were partners in the Sny Carty Levee Association to build a levee along the Mississippi River. Leonard and others gave McIntyre a promissory note for $1,400, and McIntyre assigned the note to Stuart and Edwards. After the association failed to pay, Stuart and Edwards sued Leonard and other members of the association in an action of debt. Roberts, one of the association members, pleaded that the association had not given the note. Stuart and Edwards filed a bill of discovery to determine whether the proper association officials, the president and secretary, had executed the note. The association retained Lincoln. Roberts sued Stuart and Edwards for a bill of discovery and injunction to stop the debt case. The court ruled for Stuart and Edwards and awarded $139.40 for the debt and an additional $28.05 in damages. Leonard requested and received an appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court, but there is no record that Leonard prosecuted the appeal in the supreme court. Lincoln received $50 for his legal services in this case and two others (Lewis v. Leonard et al.; Gregory v. Leonard et al.).
