Summary

2017 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry
Significance: All Saints Episcopal Church is located in Ravenswood, a neighborhood in the City of Chicago, and was built at a time when Ravenswood was a small, wooded suburban farming community. The church was designed in the Stick Style that was popular in the East for suburban buildings in the 1860s, and throughout the Midwest suburbs through the 1880s. Stick Style buildings are extremely rare in Chicago as the city outlawed wood frame construction within city limits following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. All Saints Church is a rare example of this style, and might be the only Stick Style church and perhaps the oldest wood frame church in Chicago. In 1883, All Saints Episcopal Church was built to the designs of architect John C. Cochrane, best known for his design of the Illinois State Capitol building. Cochrane was a successful architect in Chicago and designed many courthouses in the Midwest, as well as many early churches, hospitals, and residences in Chicago.
