Summary

Print satirizes Charles Wilkes' United States Exploring Expedition, which left in August 1838. The upper left vignette shows Wilkes in a rowboat with scientists who use a transit or telescope to see fauna. The upper right vignette shows Wilkes, huddled with sailors, surrounded by polar bears and penguins, their rowboat sinking. The lower center vignette depicts Navy Commissioners Isaac Chauncey, Charles Morris, and Alexander S. Wadsworth at sea, flanked by James K. Pauling, Secretary of the Navy and a sad sailor.
