Anna & William Hinckley House, 202 East Fourth Street, Hinsdale, Du Page County, IL
Summary
Significance: The Hinckley House is an impressively scaled and richly detailed Queen Anne residence located in the village of Hinsdale, Illinois...The house was built in 1886 for Anne and William Hinckley and is a classic example of American Queen Anne domestic architecture. Its characteristic wood shingle and clapboard siding, asymmetrical massing, rich details and corner turret are all indicative of this style. Approximately during the first or second decade of the twentieth century, a significant exterior renovation occurred. These changes are largely visible in the replacement of the original Queen Anne porch with a Classical Revival porch and rich Ionic columns, the truncation of the steeply pitched conical roof over the turret and replacement with a shallower cone, the removal of some Slick Style details from the gables, and some other minor modifications. It is likely the renovations occurred after 1906 when the third owner, the Barnhart family, occupied the house. The interior retains its custom millwork, art glass windows, and attractive details throughout.
