The engineers were an indispensible part of the American forces in North Russia, because everything in the line of tools and skilled artisans was nowhere to be found in Archangel, and everything of a skilled nature in the whole district was done by the engineers, who became General Utility men in the widest meaning of the words. With Major Morris is Lieut. Giffels, who came back from the front to get A.R.C. supplies for this men. They had lost nearly everything they possessedin the course of their rapid campaigning was through the deep wooded swamps where it was impossible to make any progress with the weight of the normal pack carried by the American soldier.
