Arles, Church of San Trophine [sic], the cloisters

description

Summary

France, Arles. As Wuerth described, "View of the Cloisters, Church of San Trophine [sic] in Arles. Colors, black, green, brown, violet, cream, yellow and orange on white paper."
Dated 1890 in Pennell Legacy catalogue, when Pennell and his wife visited Arles in May of that year. It may, however, be from an earlier trip in 1888, based on very similar signed Pennell drawings, including one dated specifically Sept. 1888, illustrated in Harriet W. Preston, "A Provençal Pilgrimage" in The Century Magazine, 1890 July.
Exhibited: The Pennell Legacy: Two Centuries of Printmaking, An Exhibition at the Library of Congress, December 1983 through May 1984.
Inscribed on verso: 02-84-048.68.
Wuerth annotated with 640.
Wuerth, L.A. List of original drawings and paintings, [p. 120], [no.] 640, as Arles: "Church of San Trophine [sic]."
Forms part of: Joseph and Elizabeth Robins Pennell collection.
Good condition.
