Significance: Austerlitz Plantation was built ca. 1832-35 by Antoine DeCuir, a free man of color, on 1800 acres of land purchased from the Indians by his father in 1783 on Fausse Riviere (False River), a wide oxbow lake in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. Legend has it that the house was designed by a builder from Santo Domingo, who provided a scale model of the house to aid in its construction. Unfortunately, both the model and the name of the designer have been lost to history. The DeCuirs were Bonapartists, as were many Louisiana Creoles, and their house was named in honor of Napoleon's victory at Austerlitz in 1805. ... The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
