Bantam, Connecticut. Much of the food that is served in Bantam homes is bought at the local First National Store, part of New England's leading food chain. Manager Charley Dempsey, who admits that he sometimes takes off his hat when sleeping, hopes soon to get a larger store with a full line of meats, but is worried about the difficulty in getting meat cases. He's very pleased about the increase in his business, which has meant larger weekly checks for him, and has increased his staff from one boy part-time two years ago to three full-time and one part-time now. He looks for an even greater volume when the second forty units of the new housing project are completed. Charley, who was in the Army during the last war, and all his employees are natives of Bantam. The main difference rising food prices have meant to Bantam housewives, says Dempsey, is that whereas they used to order without bothering to ask the price, they now ask the price, then say what they want
