2003 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Fourth Place
Significance: The Refectory was one of the few structures in the park that was not designed by Fehr; its plan and design were approved before the National Park Service hired him. It is a load-bearing stone masonry building with an exterior treatment of random ashlar with rusticated finish and a wood shingle roof. The Refectory was constructed from 1934-36; later additions included the bathroom and kitchen wings, both wood-framed with "waney-edged" weatherboard siding. In addition, the rear terrace of flagstones was replaced by poured concrete and 3 of the doors on the northwest elevation were remodeled into recessed windows. The interior of the Refectory exhibits some of the crafts of Companies 1805 and 1811, including stone and wood carvings above the fireplaces.
