description

Summary

Map shows the area between Dinwiddie Court House and Five Forks, Va., including the location of troops at different times during the engagement. Beginning on March 30, 1865, Sheridan advanced on the Five Forks area. He was stopped overnight at Dinwiddie Court House due to heavy rain. On March 31st he advanced toward Five Forks only to meet significant Confederate resistance, and was forced back toward the Court House. Heavily reinforced overnight, on April 1st the Union again advanced on the now-entrenched Confederates. Vastly outnumbered, the Confederate forces withdrew, in the process allowing the vital South Side Railroad to fall into Union hands. This map gives a close-in look at the action.
