Summary

Significance: The Beth Forge Division of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation is the earliest and only extant heavy steel forging facility in the United States. Designed by the noted ironmaster and mechanical engineer, John Fritz, Beth Forge has been a vital supplier of critical components to the U.S. Navy since the 1880s. During World War I it became one of the largest defense plants in the world. Beth Forge was also the profit center around which the modern Bethlehem Steel Corporation was created.
