Bird's eye view of a "valley fill" at the Samples mountaintop removal mine on Cabin Creek, near Kayford Mountain

Event: Aerial tour of mountaintop removal and reclamation.
Valley fills serve as sites for dumping the excess rocks and dirt excavated in order to retrieve multiple seams of coal. This shot affords a view of the "toe," as the catchment pond at the base of a valley fill is called.
