Significance: Home of Blanche K. Bruce (1854-1898), the first black man to serve a full term as a United States Senator. A former slave, Bruce represented Mississippi from 1875-1881. After his term, Bruce remained in the District, serving as Recorder of Deeds and Register of the Treasury.
