Borden's Ice Cream Store, 1103 Jefferson Street, Lafayette, Lafayette Parish, LA
Summary
Significance: Built in 1940 as part of a milk cooling station complex. Cooling stations were placed between Borden's plants that were separated by 100 to 150 miles. At mid-trip, milk would be off loaded, cooled, then returned to tanker trucks to prevent milk spoilage over long travel distances. Not only is Borden's significant as the last company operated dairy store in the United States, but also as a dairy store that has remained basically unchanged from an architectural point of view for over sixty-five years.
