Bower Building, 409-413 East Weber Avenue, Stockton, San Joaquin County, CA

description

Summary

Significance: The Bower Building is an excellent example of Victorian commercial architecture in Stockton. The polychromatic and ornamental brickwork and the second-floor proportions and details remain intact, thereby continuing to demonstrate the building's high degree of workmanship. The interior of the second-floor dance hall appears to have been altered in the 1920s, reflecting the Egyptian Revival phase of architecture. A social club of Masons called "Sciots," which started around 1905 in San Francisco, used this Egyptian-style dance hall for social gatherings.
