Significance: Three of the original settlers of Guthrie belonged to a fraternal association known as Scottish Rite Masons. The most influential of these three Masons was Harper S. Cunningham. Cunningham successfully organized the initial efforts to build a strong foundation of Scottish Rite in Guthrie and became the principal leader of the Masonic movement in Oklahoma Territory. The Masons grew so rapidly that the first temple built in 1899 quickly was outgrown and new additions were added in 1907. Due to the extreme growth of the Scottish Rite Masons, it was realized that even with the new additions the temple would not be large enough for the future. The Scottish Rite Masons would have to start looking for a new home and it just happened that at the same time an area in Guthrie called 'Capitol Park' was being put up for sale...
