description

Summary

1990 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry
Significance: The cottage is more than a restoration of the place where the famous poet was born, January 6, 1878. It is largely a reconstruction, though not quite a replica...At the rear of the site lies the poet's grave, where he was interred in 1967, marked by the red granite boulder, "remembrance rock." Directly west of the cottage on the corner are located the caretaker's house, a late 19th-century two-story frame structure, and a garage of recent construction...The state of Illinois acquired the property in 1970, and it open to the public year around.
Unprocessed Field note material exists for this structure: FN-173
Survey number: HABS IL-1159
