description

Summary

1985 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Third Place
Significance: Carolina Church is located roughly twenty-six miles southeast of Hope, Arkansas. Twelve miles west of Hope lies Washington, the former Confederate State Capital. The church was built before the Civil War in 1852 alongside the Washington Post Road, a major route which connected Washington with the eastern part of the state. The church served many small farm families from the surrounding area as well as travelers along the road. Over time, the church grew increasingly isolated due to much of the local traffic being diverted to Hope, and to the selling of most of the small farms to large forest products companies.
