Summary

Significance: The original Carter-Gilmer House was constructed in 1820. After the Civil War it underwent extensive changes. The present structure is a good example of the Federal townhouse type. It retains much of the quality craftsmanship of the original structure. / The Carter-Gilmer House is three story, three bay, brick Federal type townhouse. It was built in 1820 as a two story gabled house by Dr. Charles Carter. It has since received several additions. Five generations of maternal lineal descendants of Charles Carter lived in the house until 1955 when this chain was broken.
