Caryville Bridge, State Route 10 (US 90) Spanning Choctawhatchee River, Caryville, Washington County, FL

Significance: The Caryville Bridge was constructed in 1927 as part of State Route (SR) 10, to span the Choctawhatchee River between Washington and Holmes Counties, Florida. The original bridge, designed and fabricated by the Pensacola Shipbuilding Company, consisted of four Warren deck trusses and one double leaf "Scherzer Rolling Lift" bascule span. The approach spans employed timber trestles supported by cast-in-place concrete pile foundations. In 1943-1944, designs were developed to widen the roadway to accommodate the increased loads of vehicular traffic. These plans, which were carried out between 1944 and 1952, resulted in the reconfiguration of the Caryville Bridge to a Warren fixed deck truss design. The Caryville Bridge is significant in an area of engineering for its innovative, 1940s design to modify the original bridge. In addition, the Caryville Bridge is one of the few surviving bridges in the state constructed by the Pensacola Shipbuilding Company, which was a principal bridge builder in the state.
