Significance: It was built between 1765-1773 as part of the landward defensive ensemble of San Juan. Its design evolved into a non-classical configuration in order to strengthen the existing adjacent 17th century wall. The north rampart of San Carlos was oriented so as to flank a hill which permitted a covered approach to the walls of the city. The south rampart transformed an existing ridge into a fortified position dominating the approaches to the city gate.
