Summary
Significance: In 1631, Governor Enrique Enriquez de Sotomayor began to enclose San Juan and strengthen its defenses by building the Castillo de San Cristobal. In 1765, a complete redesigning and rebuilding of San Cristobal was undertaken by military engineers Tomas O'Daly and Juan Fransisco Mestres. Most of the modifications, including the gun emplacement known as the Santa Teresa Battery, were completed by 1783. The defenses of Puerto Rico were turned over to the U.S. Army in 1898...
