These furnaces convert scrap iron and steel into high quality steel alloys. This type of furnace gives much faster heating and permits the accurate temperature control so necessary in the processing of the high quality steels. In the brass and copper casting shop, the operator of an electric furnace is pouring the molten metal into molds to form shells, or rough tubes, which are later formed into finished tubes. Tubes are formed by casting molten metal into these molds in which a refractory core has been inserted. The molds are mounted on a turntable, which brings them into position to receive the pouring.
