Cave Hill Cemetery, Rustic Shelter House, Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson County, KY

description

Summary

Significance: The design of the structure was based on Cottage Orne, a rustic cottage popularized in France by Richard Mique during Marie Antoinette's time. It was used as a favorite picnic spot during pre-Civil War days. // One of few surviving examples in America of rustic architecture, this building dates from the earliest days of Cave Hill Cemetery, chartered in 1848, and was originally used as the cemetery office. The rustic style, Cottage Orne', popularized by Richard Mique in Le Hameau for Marie Antoinette, found its greatest usage in America in the decade preceding the Civil War. The building is presently used as a maintenance facility.
