Charges railroads with gambling on stock market. Washington, D.C., July 6. Alexander F. Whitney, president of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, leaving the White House today after a conference with the President. Whitney said that railroads could save 700,000,000 to 8,000,000,000 annually if they would do nothing but sell transportation. He charged the railroads had been "gambling on the stock market" and attempting to give rebates to shippers and added "we expect to make a very strong case against the proposed 15 percent wage cut," 7638

Collection of photographic negatives includes glass and film negatives taken by Harris & Ewing, Inc., which provide excellent coverage of Washington people, events, and architecture, during the period 1905-1945. Harris & Ewing, Inc., gave its collection of negatives to the Library in 1955. The Library retained about 50,000 news photographs and 20,000 studio portraits of notable people. Approximately 28,000 negatives have been processed and are available online. (About 42,000 negatives still need to be indexed.)
