Charlestown Navy Yard, Shipfitters' Shop, Southeast side of First Avenue between Ninth & Thirteenth Streets, Boston, Suffolk County, MA

The Boston Redevelopment Authority hired William A. Owens to document all buildings in the Charlestown Navy Yard in 1977, most of which were exterior photographs.
Significance: The Charlestown Navy Yard complex (also known as the Boston Navy Yard or Naval Shipyard), listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, is a designated National Historic Landmark. It has historical significance as one of the oldest U.S. Naval Shipyards (1800) and was decommissioned in 1974. The Shipfitters' Shop has historical significance for its integral role in the shipyard as a sheet metal, casting mold, plumbing and structural shop and for its innovation in consolidating formerly scattered shipfitting tasks into an organized fabrication and assembly process. It also has architectural significance as a large industrial building in the Classical Revival Style by the Navy Public Works Office's early 20th-century construction program.
