Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, Charles Mill, 106.0 miles above tidewater (above Lock 44), Williamsport, Washington County, MD

Significance: Charles' Mill, located on the berm side of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal 108 miles above tidewater, is one of the few remaining examples of an economic reason for the canal's existence. The flour mill dating from the mid-nineteenth century, formed the industrial center for a complex of related structures. Floods combined with the closing of the canal, forced the mill to cease operations in 1924. It is presently owned by Mr. & Mrs. Bernard Charles.
