Summary

Significance: Seventy-four lift locks raised the level of the canal from tidewater at Georgetown in the District of Columbia to 605 feet at Cumberland. Located adjacent to Lock #18 on the berm side of the canal is the remains of a lockhouse which served both Locks 17 and 18. It was constructed soon after 1830 of red sandstone from the quarries of Seneca Creek.
