Summary
Significance: Sculpture designed by noted sculptor Daniel Chester French. Monument honors Gen. James Oglethorpe, founder of the Georgia Colony and planner of Savannah. Symbolism and inscriptions on the monument honor the founding of the city and colony. Focal point of Chippewa Square, one of Savannah's many squares around which the plan of the city was focused.
