Summary

Significance: The Christopher Johnson Cottage is a one and one-half story frame building dating to about 1764-74. Sometime between the HABS photographs of the 1930s and the image taken in 1979, a door opening onto the front porch was changed to a window.

The Johnson Cottage is located on the property known as Rosedale today.

The nineteenth-century house Rosedale is a two-story, brick structure built by Odin Clay, the first President of the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad. A wing was added to Rosedale in 1929.

Also on the Rosedale property, and seen in the background of the Johnson Cottage photographs, are several outbuildings.
