Summary

Event: Mountaintop Removal Summit.
In August of 1999, Sam Cook, an anthropologist at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, organized a Mountaintop Removal Summit. The summit, held at the Appalachian South Folklife Center near Pipestem, brought together activists working with community-based organizations, as well as from regional and national organizations concerned with the cultural and environmental costs of mountaintop removal mining.
