Company House, State Route 719, Alberene, Albemarle County, Virginia

description

Summary

Significance: This house, which once was the dominant structure of the small company town of Alberene, is a good example of the American Queen Anne style. It is a somewhat uncommonly styled building for the area of Virginia in which it is located. Located on a prominent hill in the quarry town of Alberene, in southern Ablemarle County, the Albemarle Soapstone Company House remains a monument to the prestige of a bygone company. Built in 1899 for the president of the company, the Victorian house is richly embellished with soapstone both on the exterior and in the interior.
