Significance: The Academy of the Sacred Heart was established in 1821. It has been in continual use as a school for girls for 186 years. The school is one of twenty school in the Sacred Heart network in the US, with 200 schools worldwide. The Academy was listed in the National Register in 1975. The Brick Barn was built in 1854. The building was damaged in a 1922 fire, which is most evident on the south elevation. The rest of the building remains largely as it was originally designed. The Brick Barn is significant as an uncommon for nineteenth century agricultural building, even those constructed of brick, to remain largely intact and functioning essentially as originally designed.
