description

Summary

Significance: Built and operated by David Saylor; the first Portland cement in the United States was reputedly produced by these kilns in 1875. According to Paul A. Lentz, president of the Coplay Cement Manufacturing Company, "they represent the only battery of vertical Portland cement kilns in existence. They have not been operated since the early 1900's, made obsolete by the introduction of rotary kilns... The company was founded by David O. Saylor, who in 1871 developed and patented America's first Portland cement. These kilns were installed by him and stand today as part of an historical park.
