The composition of this sheet is similar to those in Wouverman's paintings, which often include numerous figures in a landscape or near a town with some on horseback and some walking. In a painting in the Louvre (inv. 1953) there is a similar fountain and tall trees at left, although the Louvre painting represents a much larger and more elaborate scene. Wouverman's drawings are of several types: elaborate finished compositions or compositional and figural sketches for paintings. Typical of the artist is the doll-like sketchiness of the figures with little bulbous heads and tiny dots for the features. As indicated in the present drawing, Wouverman was more interested in elaborating the entire composition rather than concentrating on the individual protagonists.
Condition assessment: Sheet is rounded at top. Outlined in brown ink. Foxed. Some staining, especially on verso. Appears to have been tacked down on left and right at some time, 2014.
