Summary

2016 HALS Challenge Entry: Documenting National Register Listed Landscapes
For additional documentation, see also HABS LA-1233 (Crowell Lumber Mill)
Significance: Crowell Sawmill Historic District, located in rural Rapides Parish, Louisiana, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on February 11, 1993. Additional documentation submitted in 2008, presented justification for Crowell Sawmill to be listed as a cultural resource of national significance. Within the historic district are rare buildings and an industrial railroad that date to the early twentieth century. Also within the complex is machinery contemporary with this era of steam-powered lumbering.

No sawmill in a similar level of preservation remains within the eastern two-thirds of the United States. The existence of historic structures, rail tracks and related equipment, and timber harvesting and processing technology from this period of industrial lumbering authenticate the Southern Forest Heritage Museum as a rare and incomparable cultural landscape.
