Summary
Significance: The building is an example of German cultural and architectural influences in the midwest during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Romanesque architectural forms are used on the exterior of the first phase of the building, Renaissance on the exterior of the second, but the whole is unified in massing, scale, and materials. The building served as the center of German cultural activity, especially for the Turnverein or gymnastic club.
