DCM 1556: Chabrier de Peloubet Flute in C
Summary
Instrument type: Flute in C
Medium: Cocus(?), or rosewood(?), with metal-lined ivory head. Silver keys and ferrules. Neither attribution, cocus or rosewood, may be correct. See "Conventions and Definitions," no. 7, Materials.; 65.7 cm.
Key Holes System: 8 keys, saltspoon, with pewter plugs over round metal plates for low C#, C. Pin in block.
Mark Maximum: C. PELOUBET / NEW-YORK / FACTORY AT / BLOOMFIELD / N.J.
Mark Additional: Mark on foot. Mark on head, barrel, upper and lower: C. PELOUBET / NEW-YORK.
Condition: Head joint, both sections, cracked. Ivory repaired with 2 silver ferrules. Middle joint missing long F key and part of block. Foot joint missing low C#, C, keys and portion of block for same, as well as bottom ferrule.
Provenance: Source not known.
The Dayton C. Miller collection in the Library of Congress, contains nearly 1,700 flutes and other wind instruments, statuary, iconography, books, music, trade catalogs, tutors, patents, and other materials mostly related to the flute. It includes both Western and non-Western examples of flutes from around the world, with at least 460 European and American instrument makers represented. Items in the collection date from the 16th to the 20th century.
