D.H. Day Farmstead, Outbuilding, Route 109, Glen Arbor, Leelanau County, MI

description

Summary

Significance: Light (2") wood balloon framing (1" ribbon nailed to studs for 2nd floor joist support). Structure was apparently neither level nor plumb nor square even when built, based on dimensional discrepancies. Building was purportedly moved to the site from Glen Haven; it was obviously not part of the original architectural composition and does not appear in historic photographs. Shiplap siding; first floor concrete slab on grade; second floor boards. New asphalt shingles over original cedar shingles on board roofing. Cupola no longer functions as a ventilator; any roof opening is no longer extant or apparent. Large door opening on south elevation was cut into original structure later with an inadequate header.
