Engine House No. 5, 274 Middle Street, Bridgeport, Fairfield County, CT
Summary
Significance: A 19th century center city fire station adopted for continued use in the 20th century. One of approximately 10 firehouses constructed (or reconstructed) in Bridgeport during the period 1916-1918 when the population of the city virtually doubled and previously semi-rural sections were incorporated into the urban fabric. Architecturally, it is perhaps most significant for the continuity and anchoring effect it lends to the collection of 3-and 4-story brick commercial structures in the area.
