Fort McClellan Ammunition Storage Area, Second Avenue (Magazine Road), Anniston, Calhoun County, AL

description

Summary

Significance: The Ammunition Storage Area of Fort McClellan represents two eras of building design. Buildings 4403 and 4404 are standard field depot magazines built in 1917, while Buildings 4408, 4409, and 4414 are igloos dating to 1941. Both sets of buildings provide information on the evolution and technology of safe ammunition storage between the World Wars. The 1941 buildings in particular afford a case study of a developing technology as they are early examples of igloo magazines.
