description

Summary

Significance: Building T-10601 is a Fireproof Walk, Type WK-3, one of three types of walkways that connect the buildings at the hospital area. It is the second most common of the walkways that also include WK-1, Walk-Covered-Open (HABS NO. WI-308-ET) and WK-2, Walk-Covered-Enclosed (HABS NO. WI-308-ER). Research indicates that all of the Type WK-3 walkways were constructed in 1942. All three of these types of corridors provided protected passageways that connected wards to clinics, barracks, mess halls, recreation buildings, and almost all of the other types of structures in the hospital area. In addition, the fireproof walkways housed the piping for the steam heating system for the hospital complex.
