Summary

Significance: Fort Sam Houston was founded in 1876 as the new location for the San Antonio quartermaster depot which had previously been situated several miles to the south along San Antonio River. The first mission which protected the Texas frontier. From the beginning, the new depot was known as the headquarters of the department of Texas which moved its operations there before construction was completed. In later years, as the Army sought to reduce the number of small garrison posts scattered throughout western Texas, the depot was expanded to serve as a large centrally located garrison post for both infantry and cavalry...
