Fort Sheridan, Guardhouse, Lyster Road, Lake Forest, Lake County, IL

description

Summary

Significance: The Guardhouse is one of the most architecturally notable of the Holabird and Roche designs at Fort Sheridan. A brick portico dominates the central facade, and rows of narrow arched windows pierce the two side wings. It has served as a guardhouse since its construction in 1890 to the present. It was heavily used in the 1960s during the period of the Vietnam War. Part of the building now houses the post museum. The south wing is currently utilized as a minimum security confinement facility. All the cell blocks remain intact.
