Summary
Significance: The lower crossing of the Colorado River was a strategic site, and here Fort Yuma served as an important post for the protection of the southern emigrant route. First used in 1849, the early structures were destroyed by fire three years later. The present barracks and several other buildings were built 1852 to 1855. It was named Fort Yuma at the beginning of the Civil War, and continued to be used by the U.S. Army until 1885. The buildings were assigned to the Yuma Indian Reservation in 1892. California Historical Landmark #806. This building was built after 1892.
