Gabriel Homestead, River Road, Four Corners, Gallatin County, MT
Summary
2015 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Second Place
Significance: Damon Gabriel's homestead is a clear and well-defined example of a successful homestead established in the late 1800s. He was prepared to work hard in order to establish and maintain un-worked, rough land and to create a self-sufficient settlement. When he perceived an opportunity to more fully engage the land for the benefit of his family and their home, he appears to have taken steps to do so, raising sheep and hogs in addition to cattle and crops. In addition to the 320 acre ranch, Damon Gabriel owned land closer to the larger settlement of Bozeman. It is possible that Gabriel's investment in real estate was speculative.
