Genl Butler holding the mob in check at New Orleans

Benjamin Franklin Butler, Civil War Union army Major General, stands on the portico of a marble building with the American flag waving overhead. With a stern expression and arms folded, he appears before a mob of angry, violent men clenching their fists and brandishing weapons.

In early 1862 Butler was appointed commander of the Union troops that occupied New Orleans. He ruled the territory with an iron hand, invoking the hatred of Southerners and earning the nickname "Beast Butler."
