1991 Charles E. Peterson Prize, First Place
Significance: The GIddings-Wilkin House was built in 1843 as a 1-1/2 story residence by Jabez Deming Giddings for bride, Ann Tarver. Between 1860 and 1872 the house was enlarged to a full two story structure with bay windows and front porch on the first floor and an attached kitchen in the rear. The main house has a zinc-lined recessed roof-reservoir behind a deep cornice. The collected rainwater provided insulation and fire protection, and fed an underground cistern for use in the home. The best quality cedar, cypress, pine and oak were used in the construction and additions to the house...
